A Heartbreaking Exit for Cameroon at Afcon 2025
The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) has seen its fair share of drama, and the quarter-final match between hosts Morocco and Cameroon was no exception. Bryan Mbeumo, the Cameroon forward, expressed his disappointment over their exit, leaving fans and players alike with a sense of sadness.
In a thrilling encounter at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, Morocco emerged victorious with a 2-0 scoreline. Brahim Diaz and Ismael Saibari were the architects of Morocco's triumph, scoring in front of a passionate home crowd. For Mbeumo, who made his Afcon debut after declaring for Cameroon in 2022, the result was a bitter pill to swallow.
"We failed to showcase our true potential in the first half," Mbeumo told BBC Sport Africa. "But in the second half, we showed our true colors. We dominated possession and made them adjust their game. They capitalized on their chances, and we must give them credit."
Mbeumo's sentiments were echoed by Cameroon head coach David Pagou, who acknowledged the team's timid start. "The players were a bit nervous initially, but we saw a different side in the second half. The team fought back, and we're proud of their effort."
However, Pagou's appointment itself was shrouded in controversy. He was named head coach just before the finals, stepping into the role after the sacking of Belgian Marc Brys by the Cameroonian Football Federation and its president, Samuel Eto'o. This decision has sparked debates among football enthusiasts.
But here's where it gets interesting: Cameroon's squad for Afcon 2025 was notably youthful, with several senior players, including goalkeeper Andre Onana, left out. This decision paid off with the impressive performance of Bayer Leverkusen striker Christian Kofane, who made his international debut and scored against Mozambique and South Africa.
"Our team is a blend of youth and quality. It's a positive sign for Cameroon's future," Mbeumo added.
And this is the part most people miss: the fiery atmosphere in the stadium likely played a role in Cameroon's hesitant first-half performance. Morocco head coach Walid Regragui praised his team's performance, calling it their best since their historic World Cup semi-final run in 2022. Saibari, the goalscorer, described the fan support as "amazing," motivating the team to work harder.
Morocco's victory has secured their spot in the Afcon semi-finals for the first time since 2004. They aim to claim their second continental title, having last achieved this feat 50 years ago. Defender Romain Saiss, who has been out with an injury since the opening match, expressed the team's determination to make history and break their bad record.
"We're thrilled with our performance, the intensity, and the desire we displayed. The team's mentality was exceptional," Saiss said.
Real Madrid playmaker Brahim Diaz, who scored against Cameroon, was praised by Regragui as Morocco's best player and their "X factor." Diaz's three goals in the group stage and his winning goal against Tanzania in the last 16 have solidified his status as the tournament's top scorer.
So, who will Morocco face in the semi-finals? It's a battle between Algeria and Nigeria, with the winner advancing to face the Moroccans. Who do you think will take the continental title? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
