The Birmingham Squadron is embarking on a new chapter by relocating its operations, a move that signifies the conclusion of its journey in the Magic City. This decision stems from the team’s desire to align more closely with its NBA affiliate, the New Orleans Pelicans.
In an official statement shared with ABC 33/40, the organization articulated that after thoroughly reviewing their basketball operations, they concluded that the G-League team would benefit from being situated nearer to the Pelicans. "Our time spent in Birmingham has been invaluable; it truly has been a remarkable partnership with the city and the arena," the announcement expressed. The Squadron emphasized that this relocation is a strategic step forward for the team's future.
Additionally, the team extended its gratitude towards local leaders, including BJCC Executive Director and CEO Tad Snider, Mayor Randall Woodfin, and the passionate fans who have supported them throughout their tenure.
In a show of support for the Squadron's move, the Kenner City Council in Louisiana convened on Thursday and unanimously passed a resolution endorsing the relocation to the Kenner Pontchartrain Convention & Civic Center, with a vote tally of 6-0; one member was absent during the vote.
As of now, there has been no official announcement regarding the timeline for this transition, but ABC 33/40 will be diligently monitoring any updates as they unfold.
