Boeing's 777X is taking another step toward the skies, but the journey hasn't been smooth. The Air Current reports that Boeing has received the green light to proceed with the next phase of certification trials for its 777-9 wide-body jet. This is a crucial development for the aircraft, which has faced significant delays.
The U.S. aviation regulatory agency approved Boeing to begin the third of five major phases of certification flight tests. This phase is reportedly the most extensive single round of evaluations for the 777X program.
A Boeing spokeswoman confirmed the news, stating that the company is working closely with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to meet all certification requirements. The FAA has not yet provided an official comment.
Why is this so important? The 777X is a cornerstone of Boeing's long-term strategy in the wide-body aircraft market, where its 747 and 777 jets have previously dominated. However, the path to certification and production has been fraught with setbacks, pushing back delivery dates by several years. These delays have resulted in over $15 billion in charges, putting financial pressure on the company.
And this is the part most people miss... These challenges have created an opening for rival Airbus and its A350, especially as international travel recovers. Boeing's recent earnings report revealed that the first delivery of the 777X is now anticipated in 2027, along with a $5 billion charge.
Earlier this month, Boeing received approval from the FAA to increase 737 MAX production to 42 aircraft per month, up from the previous limit of 38.
