Cavaliers vs Magic: Can Orlando Rebound? | NBA 2026 Season (2026)

The Orlando Magic are eager to bounce back against the rising Cleveland Cavaliers

Orlando Magic power forward Paulo Banchero has reached his limit with frustration. After suffering two significant home defeats against the Charlotte Hornets in under a month, he is keen to turn things around.

On Saturday, the Magic will seek redemption as they prepare to face the increasingly competitive Cleveland Cavaliers in the first game of a home-and-home series.

In their recent outing, Banchero led the team with 23 points, seven rebounds, and five assists during a disappointing 124-97 loss at home to the Hornets, who had a commanding lead of 33 points at one stage, ultimately securing a comfortable victory.

"They came out strong, and we allowed the game to slip away from us," Banchero reflected on the defeat. "They really dominated us for sure. When you notice a pattern like this, you need to make a change – and we haven’t done that yet."

Desmond Bane, the Magic's crucial offseason signing, contributed 21 points, but the remaining three starters only added up to 11 points, managing to hit just four of 22 shots from the field in a combined 67 minutes of play.

Despite being in a favorable position for the play-in tournament, the Magic are facing challenges, especially considering that Charlotte holds one of the four worst records in the Eastern Conference. The Hornets had previously triumphed over Orlando with a score of 120-105 in the same arena on December 26.

"We experienced a similar situation a couple of weeks ago against Charlotte," Banchero pointed out. "We fell behind early and they overwhelmed us. This pattern cannot continue."

Tensions have been high among the Magic players after they returned from two international matches, where they split their games against the Memphis Grizzlies from January 15 to 18.

Orlando staged a comeback from a 20-point deficit to win 118-111 in Berlin but then suffered a 126-109 defeat in London. Franz Wagner made his return from a six-week injury hiatus due to a high ankle sprain during the first game but will be absent when they face Cleveland.

Banchero, who is currently averaging 21.0 points and 8.7 rebounds per game, had anticipated a more successful season following the team’s elimination in the first round of the playoffs in both 2024 and 2025.

"Last season was tough, filled with many challenges," he acknowledged. "This is a recurring theme over the last few seasons. It's disheartening to see it happening again. Our defense is also struggling, which worsens the situation."

In contrast, the Cavaliers have recently found their rhythm, winning nine out of their last 13 games since December 29, advancing from eighth place to fifth in the Eastern Conference standings. Remarkably, they are now just one game behind the third spot, a position that seemed unlikely during the holiday season.

Cleveland made a late-night flight to Central Florida after narrowly defeating the Sacramento Kings 123-118 the previous night. Donovan Mitchell shone with 33 points, while Evan Mobley matched his season-high with 29 points, along with 13 rebounds and seven assists.

"We’re moving in the right direction," Mobley commented, reflecting on his impressive performances, which totaled 43 points, 27 rebounds, and seven blocks over the Cavaliers' last two wins. "I’m focused on building on my recent games. It’s a result of all the hard work I've been putting in."

Following a heavy defeat by the NBA champion Oklahoma City Thunder (136-104) at home on January 19, Cleveland managed to secure victories against both Charlotte and Sacramento. The introduction of second-year swingman Jaylon Tyson into the lineup has injected much-needed energy into the team.

Tyson has been impressive, averaging 19.6 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 3.8 assists over the last five games, four of which ended in victories. His enthusiasm seems to have energized Mobley, who has shown marked improvement since coach Kenny Atkinson challenged him earlier in the week regarding his level of aggressiveness.

"With Darius Garland sidelined due to injury, we need to create opportunities for Donovan off the ball," Atkinson explained. "Evan has been outstanding in being assertive and making the right plays."
