A Utah football legend is stepping down. After an incredible 21-year run as head coach, Kyle Whittingham is retiring from the University of Utah Utes. This marks the end of an era, leaving a significant void in the program. But what made Whittingham's tenure so remarkable? Let's dive in.
Whittingham, 66, announced his decision after leading the Utes to a commendable 10-2 record this year – their third 10-win season since 2020. He stated, "The time is right to step down... His journey with the Utes began in 1994 as a defensive line coach under Ron McBride. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming the defensive coordinator in 1995. He then spent two years under Urban Meyer before taking the helm as head coach in 2004.
During his tenure, Whittingham became the winningest coach in Utah's history. His most outstanding season was in 2008, leading the Utes to an undefeated record and a Mountain West Conference Championship. They capped off that season with a stunning 31-17 victory over Alabama in the 2009 Sugar Bowl. Other highlights include consecutive Pac-12 titles and Rose Bowl appearances in 2021 and 2022, a first for the program.
Whittingham's career boasts an impressive 177-88 all-time record. He achieved a winning record in 18 of his 21 years as head coach, including a remarkable streak of 10 consecutive winning seasons from 2014-2023. He also led the team to eight 10-win seasons and 11 bowl wins. His contributions were recognized with two National Coach of the Year awards, in 2019 and 2008.
But here's where it gets controversial... Whittingham's departure leaves a massive legacy. His impact is undeniable. As Utah Athletic Director Mark Harlan noted, Whittingham "played a pivotal role in the most historic and successful seasons in program history."
Whittingham's final game will be the Las Vegas Bowl on December 31st.
