A recent acquisition has sparked concerns among nurses in Kalamazoo, Michigan, highlighting the impact of healthcare system changes on caregivers and retirees. The Michigan Nurses Association has raised the alarm over the challenges faced by healthcare professionals and retirees in accessing care due to alterations in insurance coverage following Beacon Health System's takeover of Ascension Borgess.
This issue is part of a larger campaign by the association, which has supported the "Be Better, Beacon" movement seen across Kalamazoo. Nurses report difficulties with medical, dental, and mental health coverage, as well as benefits for retired nurses.
Ashley Daniels, a registered nurse with over a decade of experience at Beacon Kalamazoo Hospital, has witnessed significant changes since the transition in July. According to Daniels, the current insurance network has made it harder to access care, especially with long-standing providers in Southwest Michigan.
"Since Beacon took over, our insurance benefits have become increasingly challenging to navigate," Daniels explained. "We're now faced with a tough choice: switch to unfamiliar providers or pay more to continue seeing our trusted doctors and dentists."
The impact extends beyond active employees, affecting retired nurses as well. Under previous ownership, retired nurses received reimbursement for Medigap insurance, which helped cover costs not paid by Medicare. However, this benefit ended on December 31st, adding financial strain to retirees on fixed incomes.
Daniels emphasizes the critical role of benefits in nurse retention and patient care. "It's ironic that we provide healthcare but struggle to access good healthcare ourselves," she said.
In response, Beacon Health System officials have issued a statement valuing nurses and acknowledging the challenges of benefit transitions post-acquisition. They emphasize their commitment to fostering a supportive environment for nurses and providing outstanding care to their communities.
"We recognize the decades of service provided by our retired nurses and understand the concerns raised," the statement reads. "We remain focused on creating a respectful and supportive workplace for nurses."
Daniels hopes Beacon will address these concerns and find a solution. "I love my workplace, and I want Beacon to resolve this so nurses can feel confident about their healthcare coverage," she said.
