Ohio State has landed not one, but two cornerback commitments in a whirlwind 24-hour period, dramatically bolstering their defensive backfield. First came former Alabama cornerback Cam Calhoun. Then, in a move that sent shockwaves through the college football world, Tim Walton and the Ohio State coaching staff secured a commitment from former Georgia cornerback Dominick Kelly. This marks the Buckeyes' second cornerback acquisition this offseason, both secured within hours of each other. Like Calhoun, Kelly also visited Ohio State on Thursday, and the Buckeyes successfully sealed the deal during his Columbus visit. Thursday proved to be a banner day for OSU, adding three transfer portal prospects in total: Jackson, Calhoun, and former Florida running back Ja'Kobi Jackson.
Kelly's decision to enter the transfer portal came on Wednesday, and he wasted no time in choosing Ohio State just one day later. Interestingly, Georgia's recent acquisition of two defensive backs from the portal might have played a role in Kelly's decision to seek a fresh start elsewhere. As a true freshman for the Bulldogs, Kelly saw action in 61 snaps during his inaugural collegiate season, carrying high expectations in Athens. He participated in 10 games this season, retaining three years of eligibility. Throughout those 10 games, he recorded three total tackles and three pass deflections.
While Kelly might not be immediately thrust into a starring role for the Buckeyes this season, he possesses the potential to become a valuable rotational player and develop into a future starter at the cornerback position. Standing at 6-foot-1 and weighing 190 pounds, Kelly projects as an outside cornerback but also has the versatility to play inside if needed. And this is the part most people miss... Kelly's versatility gives the Buckeyes much needed roster flexibility. According to Pro Football Focus's grades from the 2025 season, Kelly earned an overall grade of 58.2, with a run defense grade of 63.2 and a coverage grade of 57.3.
"No matter what you do, you've got to kind of stay level-headed, right? That's the only way you're going to really be successful at this position," Kelly shared with Dawgs247 at Sugar Bowl Media Day. "Being able to have those experiences when I'm doing good, maybe giving up something, right, it's teaching me not only that, hey, you can make a play, but just as fast as you can be celebrating, you can be scolded. So I think that's really valuable that I've been able to experience that." This quote really highlights Kelly's maturity and self-awareness, suggesting he's ready to learn and contribute.
Kelly will have the opportunity to learn from veteran cornerbacks Jermaine Mathews and Calhoun, as well as Devin Sanchez, who is likely to start at one of the outside cornerback positions next season. This provides a solid mentorship structure for his development.
Kelly represents the 15th transfer portal addition for Ohio State this offseason, a testament to their aggressive approach in reshaping the roster. The impressive list includes tight end Mason Williams, long snapper Dalton Riggs, defensive lineman John Walker, wide receiver Devin McCuin, linebacker Christian Alliegro, safety Earl Little Jr., safety Terry Moore, tight end Hunter Welcing, edge Qua Russaw, defensive lineman James Smith, kicker Connor Hawkins, running back Ja'Kobi Jackson, and cornerback Cam Calhoun.
Coming out of high school, Kelly was considered the No. 374 prospect nationally and the No. 38 cornerback in the 2025 class, according to 247Sports' composite rankings. He notably reclassified from the 2026 class to the 2025 cycle to accelerate his college career. But here's where it gets controversial...
