Popeye's journey began on Crimdon Beach, where he was found at just 10 days old, suffering from mouth rot disease and an eye infection. Dehydrated and malnourished, he weighed a mere 8kg (1st 3lb). But thanks to the dedicated care of the veterinary team at Tynemouth Seal Hospital, Popeye made a remarkable transformation.
After four months of treatment, Popeye had grown to a healthy 39kg (6st 1lb) and was ready to be released back into the wild. However, there were concerns about how he would fare on his own, given his young age and the loss of his eye.
But here's where it gets controversial... A recent sighting of a one-eyed seal in Northumberland has led experts to believe that Popeye is thriving. Debbie Harrison from the British Divers Marine Life Rescue shared the exciting news, stating, "He was seen nibbling on some fishing boat ropes in Seaton Sluice, which suggests he's adapting well to his new life."
And this is the part most people miss: Popeye's story is a testament to the power of early intervention and the dedication of veterinary professionals. Mouth rot disease, if left untreated, can be devastating, as seen in the recent tragedy in the Tees Estuary where nearly all common seal pups succumbed to the illness.
Popeye, along with two other seal pups, Olive and Pebble, were treated for mouth rot. While Popeye's health initially required a longer hospital stay, Olive and Pebble made a full recovery and were released back into the North Sea. It's a powerful reminder of the importance of timely medical care for these vulnerable creatures.
Melanie Scott, one of the veterinary nurses who treated Popeye, expressed the impact he had on the team: "Popeye captured our hearts during his time in captivity. His release was an emotional moment for all of us."
