A weekend of high drama and record-breaking speeds unfolded at the Gold Coast 500, leaving both drivers and spectators reeling. The event was marked by a series of dramatic crashes, record-shattering lap times, and, unfortunately, injuries.
The qualifying session was marred by a massive crash involving 2023 champion Brodie Kostecki. His car suffered significant damage, forcing him to miss the Top 10 shootout and ultimately finishing in 16th place. The incident was so severe that it resulted in four photographers requiring medical attention. Supercars confirmed that two photographers sustained ankle injuries, one an elbow injury, and a fourth a head injury. Thankfully, all were reported to be in stable condition. Following the incident, Motorsport Australia implemented changes to photographer access in the affected area for the remainder of the event.
But here's where it gets controversial... The serious damage to Kostecki's car has put his chances of competing in both races at the Gold Coast in serious jeopardy. The DJR pit crew faced an enormous task to repair the car in time. Finalists Kai Allen and Thomas Randle also missed out on the Top 10 shootout.
Adding to the chaos, a cheeky spectator injected some humor into the situation after a crash by Cooper Murray. Murray crashed heavily early in the opening race, and the spectator was heard yelling, 'You can’t park that there mate, you can’t park that there!'
Defending Supercars champion Will Brown also fell victim to the challenging Gold Coast street circuit. During the Top 10 Shootout, Brown lost control and crashed into the concrete barrier. He was able to get out of the car on his own, but his car was significantly damaged. He later commented that he felt like he was 'straight-lining' the chicanes. Triple Eight faced a big job to get his car fixed before the afternoon's first race.
Amidst the crashes, Kiwi young gun Ryan Wood claimed pole position for the first race, edging out Broc Feeney. The top five was rounded out by Matt Payne, Wood’s teammate Chaz Mostert, and James Golding.
And this is the part most people miss... The weekend also saw records being shattered in practice sessions. The newly laid surfaces at the turn four hairpin and turn 11, combined with new spec tires, led to the fastest laps ever seen around Surfers Paradise. Reigning champion Will Brown set a stellar time of 1:09.266 in practice 1, only to be surpassed by Cam Waters in the second session, who clocked a blistering 1:08.573. This was more than a second and a half quicker than the previous record.
The quicker times made the course all the more challenging for drivers. Brodie Kostecki hit the tire barrier in practice 2, and Bryce Fullwood also ended his session early after making contact with the wall. Ryan Wood, who set the second-fastest time of the day, acknowledged the challenges posed by the new surface, stating it made the cars 'quite difficult to drive.'
Kai Allen, experiencing his first race at the Gold Coast, admitted the chicanes caught him by surprise.
What do you think? Were the new track surfaces and tire specifications a positive change, or did they contribute to the increased number of incidents? Do you think the drivers' comments about the chicanes are valid, or are they simply part of the challenge? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
