Did you know that a simple scan could reveal more than just heart disease risk? Coronary artery calcium (CAC) CT scans, a minimally invasive procedure, are revolutionizing how we assess heart health. But here's where it gets intriguing: these scans might also detect other potential health issues, some life-threatening.
These scans measure calcium deposits in the heart's arteries, helping clinicians decide on medical interventions or preventive measures like statin medications. But wait, there's more! Researchers at Intermountain Health have discovered that these routine scans can uncover a range of medical conditions.
The Surprising Findings:
In a study of 2,284 patients, nearly 10% had additional medical issues identified through CAC CT scans. From lung abnormalities to problems in the esophagus, liver, kidney, and even the bones, these scans provided a comprehensive health snapshot.
"We often find abnormalities, but some can be significant," said Dr. Brent Muhlestein. One patient's scan led to emergency surgery, emphasizing the scan's potential to save lives.
The Intermountain CorCal Trial:
The study, part of the Intermountain CorCal clinical trial, randomized healthy patients to assess plaque buildup risk. The CAC CT scans proved effective, with 247 patients (8.5%) showing other significant medical findings.
Beyond the Heart:
The scan's reach extends beyond cardiac health. Over half of the additional findings were lung-related, but issues were identified in various organs within the scan area. This suggests that CAC CT scans could be a valuable tool for early detection and prevention.
Life-Saving Potential:
Of the patients with additional findings, two-thirds were referred for further care. Notably, 23 patients had thoracic aortic aneurysms, with one requiring immediate surgery. This highlights the scan's ability to catch critical issues early.
Controversy and Comment:
While CAC CT scans show promise, expanding their use raises questions. Dr. Muhlestein acknowledges the need to determine if the time and cost are justified.
