Medetomidine, a sedative primarily used in veterinary medicine, is significantly more potent than xylazine—reportedly 200 times stronger. The BCCDC has cautioned that this powerful sedative can lead to severe health consequences, especially in overdose situations, as it tends to reduce heart rate, prolong sedation, and alter blood pressure.
In their testing, Interior Health discovered not only medetomidine but also carfentanil—a substance even more powerful than fentanyl—and benzodiazepines present in the drug samples. The combination of these drugs poses a high risk of severe overdose. Alarmingly, the overdose symptoms stemming from medetomidine and benzodiazepines are not alleviated by naloxone, a medication typically used to reverse opioid overdoses. While naloxone can still be effective against other opioids mixed with these drugs, it may not fully address all symptoms, potentially leaving users in peril even after treatment.

Interior Health strongly urges anyone in possession of substances that resemble those described to seek verification before consumption. Additionally, Interior Health provides access to a Virtual Addiction Medicine (VAM) clinic that offers comprehensive opioid agonist treatment options, including buprenorphine-naloxone (Suboxone), methadone, and slow-release oral morphine (SROM/Kadian). This virtual clinic allows individuals throughout the Interior Health region to attend appointments via phone, ensuring wider accessibility.
