A shocking turn of events in Yemen has sparked controversy and raised questions about the future of the country's fragile peace. The Saudi-backed Presidential Council has taken a bold step, accusing a separatist leader of treason, and the consequences could be far-reaching.

The leader of a prominent separatist group, Aidarous al-Zubaidi, has been charged with treason by the Yemeni presidency. This move comes after Zubaidi failed to attend talks in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, which were intended to address the escalating tensions in the region. Six other members of the presidency accused Zubaidi of undermining Yemen's independence, a serious allegation.
But here's where it gets controversial: a Saudi-led military coalition claims that Zubaidi "fled" and moved a large force to al-Dahle province. In response, coalition aircraft launched strikes on these forces, reportedly killing four people. The Southern Transitional Council (STC), which Zubaidi leads, denies these claims, stating that the strikes were unjustified and that Zubaidi remains in Aden.
The past few weeks have seen southern Yemen teetering on the edge of a new conflict. Factions that have been united in their battle against the Iran-backed Houthi movement are now turning against each other, deepening the rift between Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
STC-aligned forces have gained control of much of southern Yemen, pushing out forces loyal to the internationally recognized government. In December, these forces launched offensives to seize the eastern provinces, claiming it was necessary to restore stability and combat various extremist groups. However, Saudi Arabia has warned that these advances near its borders pose a threat to its national security and the stability of Yemen.
Saudi Arabia has also accused the UAE of pressuring its separatist allies, and has expressed support for a demand that all Emirati forces leave Yemen. This has led to a complex web of alliances and tensions, with the Saudi-led coalition striking a shipment of weapons and military vehicles for the STC, which they claim arrived from the UAE.
The UAE has denied these accusations and has since withdrawn its forces from Yemen. In the aftermath, government-loyal forces, with the help of coalition air strikes, have largely regained control of the eastern provinces.
In an attempt to diffuse tensions, Zubaidi and an STC delegation were scheduled to fly to Riyadh for talks. However, the coalition claims that Zubaidi did not board the flight and instead fled to an unknown location. Coalition forces, in coordination with the Yemeni government, launched preemptive strikes on Zubaidi's forces in al-Dhale, aiming to disrupt their movements and prevent further escalation.
These strikes, which resulted in civilian casualties, have been described as an unfortunate escalation by the STC. The presidential council has since issued a decree stripping Zubaidi of his membership and referring him for prosecution on charges of high treason and other serious offenses. The council alleges that Zubaidi has abused the cause of the South and committed crimes against civilians.
The STC, however, maintains that Zubaidi is still in Aden, carrying out his duties and closely supervising the work of various institutions. They express concern over the lack of information regarding their delegation in Riyadh and the circumstances surrounding their absence.
